10. Stone cross by Bækmarksbro

By the village of Bækmarksbro stand two medieval crosses of granite near the old Bækmark manor. On the front, one cross is inscribed with ornaments in the form of twisted robe patterns. It is believed that the robe symbolized strength and protection. As in the case of Romanesque churches, the stone crosses are from the 12th and 13th centuries. In the Middle Ages, Bækmark Manor belonged to the Bishop of Ribe, and the crosses were likely markers telling the wayfarer when he crossed the boundary to the Bishop’s land. In Denmark there exists only three such stone crosses – two of them by Bækmarksbro.
